Maud travelled the short distance to meet Ellon United in the Grill League Cup Group game knowing they only needed a point to reach the last 8. Maud started brightly with shots from Cooper and Fraser going high. A long ball forward was miss judged by Crisp whose header fell into the path of the Ellon strikers path, but Fyfe came to the rescue of Maud with a fine save. A good move involving Fraser then Sargent crossed, and Conway header went narrowly over the bar. Maud went in front on 35 mins when Sargent was played down the left, he cut in and held off the defender before firing high into the roof of the net. It stayed that way until half time.
Into the second half and Ellon came out on the front foot pushing Maud back earning a couple of dangerous corners which Fyfe did well to punch clear. Fraser wasted a good chance firing high after good set up play by Sargent. Kennedy did well on the right, held of his marker but fired into side netting when the better choice might have been to drill the ball across the 6-yard box. A ball into the Maud box hit a defender on the arm and a penalty was awarded. Up stepped the home striker to rifle home to level the game. Maud were reduced to 10 men after Zack Conway was sent off. A ball down the right nearly let Maud in but the home keeper came out but fouled outside the box but was only cautioned as the ball ran away from goal. The free kick was wasted. This gave Ellon a lift and they pressed forward but the Maud defence held firm closing out the game and into the Quarter Final of the grill cup.
Maud next game is on Tuesday 14th August against Ellon United again this time in the McBookie.com Superleague with a 7pm ko.
